Reporting & alerting

A report says more than a thousand words.
Alerting to seamlessly integrate with monitoring solutions.

Introduction

restAssured performs deep analyses on every executed test job. The analytics results of the integrity tests, and remediation attempts performed, is only a small portion of the information that is saved. Success and failure rates of various backup characteristics are also kept for future predictions and to support troubleshooting. Some of these characteristics are backup backend, day of week, time slot, duration per test, SLA type, backup type, test type and many more. This way valuable information is available to pinpoint issues in the backup infrastructure.

Reports

Various types of reports can be created by using the included report engine. Despite the fact that a report can include extensive information over longer periods of time, it only takes a few clicks to create. The test job reports include detailed information about the tested backup and all results of the tests performed. For troubleshooting support 'Evidence reports' can be requested with contain the output of all failed and/or remediated tests in separate text files.  All reports are available in the PDF format and therefore useable on all common systems for further analysis. If configured reports can be created, and emailed, automatically after a test was completed so that it can be included in a backup quality assurance process.

Logging & alerting

With the logging and alerting options provided integrations can be easily set up with existing monitoring solutions. Various types of logging and alerting can be configured.

  1. Logging to a logfile
  2. Alerts to a remote syslog server
  3. Alerts to the local broker eventlog
  4. Automated mail reports

The logfile contains one line per test job with an success indicator (success / failed / remediated) in a standard format. When configuring a remote syslog server a message containing the job tag and success indicator will be send to a syslog server every time a test job completed. The syslog messages follow the RFC 5424 standard and are accepted by all major syslog solutions available. Alerting to the local eventlog will create an entry in the 'Application' eventlog of the host servicing the broker service. The entries are created each time a test job completes and contains the job tag and success indicator. Automated mail reports will send an email to a configured address (or multiple addresses) containing a detailed job report in PDF format. These reports are identical to the reports that can be created manually.
