Backup testing

The general assumption is that a successful backup is useable.
A long time ago the general assumption was that the earth was flat...

Introduction

Quotes like "Data is the new gold" and "The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data" have been stated by institutes like The Economist and Forbes. If this is the case, why do most business not handle their data according to the value is has? The statement "your data is only as good as your last backup" is spot on in this sense. To ensure your business continuity you have to be prepared, so that a disaster can be survived by utilizing backup data to restore the crippled business functionalities. Assuming everything is fine can be very dangerous in this context.

Validating backup data

With restAssured backup data can be validated by creating test jobs. After having test flowcharts available for the backup content types you wish to validate test jobs can be deployed. There are several ways to create a test job to create optimal usability for the operations organization. By using the manual (on-demand) option, a created test job can be submitted as a AD hoc validation test. Such a test job can still validate multiple backups depending on the  job configuration settings, but will only be performed once.

Autonomous test jobs

When backup data validation has to be a continuous process, restAssured offers the option to create "triggered" test jobs. The only difference with a manual test job is that a "triggered" test job activates automatically based on a configured interval. Each time the job is activated a scan of the current backups will be executed and all applicable backups will be added to the queue for validation testing. Combined with the alerting functionality it provides businesses the information needed to swiftly respond whenever data integrity issues are found in backups.
